In 1976 Dunoon Studio Cinema opened its doors to a crowd that would have included American Navy personnel alongside locals and visitors. It was 80p for adults and 25p for children back then.

Despite the impact of COVID and an increasingly challenging operating climate for small independent cinemas, Dunoon's Studio Cinema continues to provide our community with a space to come together and enjoy films.

As the lead organisation behind Dunoon Film Festival, Dunoon Community Development Trust continues to support this key cultural venue by screening films in the cinema that support positive conversations in our community about issues you care about.

That's why we are delighted to be partnering the Cowal Community Energy and Screen Argyll to host a series of films and activities that celebrate the power of community and the simple goal of creating a positive, fairer future for all.

“Both films have an emphasis on persistence and creative solutions” says Ann Campbell partnership manager at Dunoon Community Development Trust.
“By hosting and screening these films we hope to get more people into the cinema and involved in conversations about how we can make good things happen in Dunoon linked to energy and sustainability.”

The two films that are being screened in the Studio Cinema are:

Powerstation

Monday 14 September 2026, 6pm

A documentary following artist-activists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn as they attempt to transform their street in Walthamstow, London into a community-owned renewable energy hub.

It’ll Never Work

Monday 19 October 2026

Follow the real-life struggle of converting the UK’s first fishing boat to solar and electric power to fish at a competitive and commercial level.

This film was made in Argyll, in the village of Tayvallich. The film's main character Hans Unkles will be at this screening to provide context and answer any questions.

Don’t miss out on the 2-4-1 Monday offer.

To make these screenings more affordable, we are encouraging people to sign up to the Studio Cinema’s mailing list. You you will be sent a discount code each weekend to access the 2-4-1 Mondays special offer. Signing up will take just a few minutes.
