Dunoon Film Festival was established in 2013 by Dunoon Burgh Hall Trust to extend the cultural offer in the town. Dunoon has an independent cinema – the fantastic Studio Cinema - and a wide range of local venues that area suitable for screening and viewing films.
Dunoon and the wider area of Cowal and Argyll is home to many local filmmakers and film enthusiasts. Dunoon Film Festival provides a platform for these people to come together to share their work and their knowledge of film.
Dunoon Community Development Trust now delivers the festival as an annual partnership event, that brings income, opportunity and amazing experiences to local people and visitors through the medium of film.
What local challenge is this project addressing?
Dunoon and the wider Cowal area have a significant number of venues, large and small, that all struggle to build their audiences and maintain their programmes of cultural events. By working in partnership with some of these venues, Dunoon Film Festival can help to add value to what they offer and support the marketing of these important community spaces. This is done in alignment with a Community Wealth Building agenda, using resources we have developed including the platform What's On Dunoon.
Through place-based research we have identified a local need for skills development and work opportunities, for young people and people working freelance in the cultural sector.
Through the development and delivery of Dunoon Film Festival we can provide training and employment opportunities to local people, and cultivate longer-term collaborations that lead to increased levels of employment.
Film can provide a powerful and accessible opportunity to support community conversations. By identifying films and documentaries that connect with local regeneration themes, we can help to build knowledge and understanding of issues and support local people to consider possible solutions.
